From NSW to MLB: Travis Bazzana Makes History as First Australian Drafted No. 1

In an unprecedented moment for Australian baseball, Travis Bazzana, a native of Wahroonga, New South Wales, has been selected with the first overall pick in the 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft.

This historic achievement marks the first time an Australian has been selected in the first round, let alone the top spot, setting a new milestone for the sport down under.

From Local Fields to Major League Dreams:

Travis Bazzana’s journey began on the baseball fields of NSW. From the batting cages at Golden Jubilee Fields with the Ku-ring-gai Stealers, he represented the Ryde Hawks Baseball League during his junior career and suited up for the Ryde Hawks in the NSW State League.

At just fifteen, Travis was playing with the Sydney Blue Sox in the Australian Baseball League and featured for Team Australia at multiple World Cup events. His talent and dedication quickly set him apart from his peers as he went on to star for the Division I Oregon State University Beavers, a premier college baseball program located in Corvallis, Oregon in the United States. He went on to break multiple program records and won the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year award in 2024, before being drafted first overall by the Cleveland Guardians in the 2024 MLB Draft.

Bazzana is extremely dedicated to his development, spending many years in the Baseball NSW High Performance programs. To this day, his work ethic is still a standout personality trait.

A Milestone for Australian Baseball:

“This is a monumental day for not only Baseball in NSW, but Australian baseball,” said Mark Marino, CEO of Baseball NSW.

“Travis’s selection as the first overall pick is not just a personal achievement but a landmark moment for the sport in Australia. It signifies the rising global stature of Australian baseball and the potential our athletes have on the world stage.”

Impact on Baseball Down Under:

Bazzana’s success will have a significant impact on the popularity and growth of baseball in Australia. It serves as a powerful motivator for young athletes, highlighting the opportunities available through dedication to the sport. Beyond Bazzana, The New South Wales baseball community is anticipating multiple draft picks this year, with many athletes playing college baseball in the United States and more on the way.

Other names such as Brent Iredale, Jimmy Nati, Blake Cavill and Jo Stevens are in the mix of prospects for the 2024 Draft. Only time will tell, but the 2024 college baseball season looks to be a milestone season for the future of baseball in New South Wales and Australia.

The previous highest Aussie selected was Josh Spence, who was drafted in the third round of the 2009 MLB Draft out of powerhouse Arizona State University. What Travis has accomplished this year, as a kid from Australia, is nothing short of groundbreaking.

Future Prospects and National Pride:

As Travis Bazzana prepares to embark on his professional career, he carries with him the pride and support of the entire Australian baseball community. Once Bazzana agrees to his first professional contract with the Guardians, he will be assigned to one of Cleveland’s minor league affiliates where he will begin his journey to the Major Leagues. Bazzana will likely become the Guardians’ top prospect, and one of the highest rated in all of Major League Baseball.

During an interview with MLB Network following being drafted, Bazzana had this to say about what it felt like to be drafted first overall, “It means a lot. It is hard to put into words, but it means everything. I’m just stoked and I’m happy to be with the people I’m with right now.”

“I see a lot of opportunities to make an impact on a lot of baseball players and people back home and hopefully change the narrative for baseball… hopefully this is a step towards that.”

We look forward to continuing to support Travis as he takes on his next challenge of playing professional baseball and anticipate seeing him back in the green and gold soon as well.

Bazzana hopes to represent Australia at the Under-23 World Cup and Premier-12 tournaments later this year and also mentioned his excitement to represent Australia, at the World Baseball Classic and Olympic Games down the line, if he is selected. But I think we can safely assume that the Sydney native will be pencilled in as Australia’s leadoff hitter and 2ndBaseman for years and years to come.

His achievement is a testament to the talent and potential that Australian athletes have to offer on the global stage, and we await the rest of the selections in this year’s draft!
